Converter and Inverter- What’s the Fine Line?
A converter is one of two things: either a battery charger that is connected to the distribution center and charged at the same time, or a battery charger that is built into newer installations. Either 120-volt power is provided from the shore cord to the rig itself, or via a generator. That energy flows to the same way that it does to your house and appliances such as your AC and refrigerators, all the way to the distribution center. In the distribution center, every line is equipped with a circuit breaker. 120-Volt power is sent to the converter, which is attached to the house batteries as a charger.
Inverters are usually located in an underground vaults and convert power from 12V and 120V. Inverters smaller than TVs and DVD players can be found in the TV/DVD corner of the entertainment center. Larger appliances will need at least 2000 watts to run on standard power. An inverter is also needed in mobile RV repair.
Converters are transformers that change between AC to DC. Alternating current (AC). It converts the electricity from a plug with an electrical rating of 15 amps, 30 amps, or 50 amps, to your required amenities (air conditioning, AC televisions, and AC outlets). Another part of the converter produces this voltage and will charge 12-volt batteries (also known as “dumb“batteries”).
The inverters remove energy from 12v and turn it into power for 110v outlets. You can use your house adaptors and electronic devices such as chargers, cordless phones, computers, and flat screen TVs in your RV without being plugged into “house power.”
Converters and inverters can't provide you with unlimited power. Likewise, do not blow dry your hair, run your TV, air conditioning, microwave, and coffee machine, or use your hair dryer and power washer at the same time. Certainly, you will drop something. Keep a record of how much energy your appliances use.
