What Is Causing Your Semi Truck's Steering Wheel to Malfunction?
Of course, steering problems are annoying, and you can’t wait to get it fixed at the semi truck repair. But have you ever given a thought to the root of your steering problems? It could be stemming from a worndown suspension system, bad tires, or something that doesn’t even remotely appear to be related to your steering system. It is imperative that you get your steering problems fixed at the earliest lest you end up totaling your car, or worse, with an injury.
Let us have a look at 5 of the most prevalent steering issues.
#1 Low Power Steering Fluid
A very common problem most semitruck drivers are faced with is low power steering fluid. The fluid is supposed to be topped every now and then to make sure that the hydraulic power steering system functions properly even with extensive use.
A low power steering fluid can be identified by stunted movement of the wheel, increased response time when turning, and a whining sound. Thankfully, the fix is easy.
Drop in at the local auto parts store for a container of power steering fluid. Find the fluid storage using the owner’s manual and top the fluid if the levels are low.
However, if the steering issues persist, the problem might be more than surface deep.
#2 Leaks in Power Steering Fluid Container
If you keep adding the power steering fluid but the levels just don’t go up, you might be facing a leak in the storage container. Keep checking underneath for residual fluid collecting beneath the front of your car. Typically, the power steering fluid is clear, red, or pink in color.
A leakage warrants a visit to the semitruck repair. It could originate from anywhere in the car and the fix is beyond the scope of a regular car DIYer.
#3 Damaged Steering Rack Mount
Most semitrucks manufactured today use the rack and pinion steering system. Rack mounting bushings are attached to the steering wheel. These bushings move side-to-side and absorb the impact from the suspension. A steering rack mount that has begun wearing out will result in a jerky steering, especially when driving over bumpy roads. You might also hear a clicking or popping noise in the steering column.
#4 Failing Power Steering Belt
The power steering belt works on a pulley and crankshaft mechanism. This is the auto part responsible for driving the fluid pump in control of the hydraulic steering system. If this belt starts wearing out or slacking, the wheel will feel heavy under your hands. It will also stick and no longer rotate smoothly.
The power steering belt must undergo a complete replacement to restore functionality, but in some cases, especially if the belt is new, the mechanic may simply tighten the bolts.
#5 Worn-Out Strut Bearings
Bad struts and tie rods in the suspension can cause your wheel to become wonky and stray from the usual liner motion.
Worn-out struts and tie rods are a subject of immediate concern. If you suspect that being the case, bring your semitruck in for an inspection as early as possible. The longer you ignore the problem, the greater the chance of a failed or broken suspension.
